When my children started Primary School I became very conscious of the heavy backpacks Primary School children are required to carry. I worried that irreversible damage was occurring to my children's growing little spines and I decided to do something about it. I redesigned a little French style satchel a friend of mine taught me to make years ago into a full-blown school bag!
 
I wanted the bag to be lightweight and practical. The most important feature of the design is it's waist band which helps take weight off the spine. It has a zipper pocket on the inside to keep valuables safe and two outer pockets for quick draw items like tissues or wipes etc. The shoulder straps are padded to make them more comfortable on little shoulders and there's a handy drinks holder on the side. The bag is large enough to house all the necessities for a day at school - books, pencil cases, diary, lunch, jumpers or raincoats!
 
My children love their bags and although I often have to nag them to use their waist bands they agree that it does help and makes for happier walks home from school after a long day!
